A Therapist’s Confession: The Morning a Blind Habit Triggered a Hemiplegic Migraine

Have you ever been so overworked, running on pure adrenaline and stress, that you completely stopped noticing your own body drifting out of alignment?
Just a few days ago, I fell into a trap that so many of us know all too well. I walked down to the beach for my normal sunrise swim. But as I stood on the shore looking out at the water, I had to ask myself a hard, uncomfortable question: Was this a mindful ritual, or had it just become an automated, blind habit?
In that moment of hurry, it was a habit. I had completely skipped the vital daily practice of touching base with myself, pausing, and awakening my body before deciding what was actually best for me that morning.
Instead, I tried to cut to the chase. I thought I could quick-fix my stress with a sharp, cold dip.
The Danger of the "Quick Fix"
As someone who survived a stroke at age 40 (exactly two decades ago) and lives with hemiplegic migraines, I have spent half my life learning the delicate art of regulating my physical, mental, and soul energies to prevent severe attacks. For my nervous system, a full attack means a weak left side, impaired eyesight, temporary hearing loss, deep brain fog, and the exhausting emotional cloud that follows.
My body doesn't thrive on shock tactics. It needs warmth, stillness, and to be deeply grounded in the soil and nature, free from extremes like harsh winds or hot overhead sunshine.
But in my rush to "fix" myself and get back to my growing to-do list, I plunged into the freezing water anyway.
My system instantly shut down. I couldn't move, lost all power to my limbs, and my head spun so fast I completely lost my land legs. It was dangerous, it was a mistake, and yes—as a health practitioner, I absolutely know better. Luckily, I wasn’t alone. I had a strong swim buddy in the water, and my faithful husband on the beach ready to drive me safely home.
I forgot thirty years of professional knowledge in a single moment of hurry. I chose frantic action over a mindful pause.
Day 3: Reclaiming the Path of Rejuvenation (Rasayana)
The fallout from that choice forced me into complete darkness and stillness, unable to even look at a page or a screen for two full days.
By day three, as the fog finally began to lift, I took myself out to the quiet sanctuary of my garden. I put my feet on the earth and opened a book called Rasayana by Geeta Vara.
Celebrating my 60th birthday this month, and having actively practiced as a therapist since I was 30, opening this book wasn't about learning something brand new. It was a profound, deeply necessary remembering—layered with wonderful fresh insights on top. As practitioners, we all need reminders to practice what we preach.
In simple, everyday language, the ancient principle of Rasayana translates beautifully to the path of replenishing your vital life juice or core essence.
It is the intentional practice of deeply nurturing yourself so your body can rebuild its natural resilience, immunity, and inner spark from the inside out. My body didn't need the shock of the freezing sea that morning; it needed the warmth of the earth, a slow breath, and zero expectations.
The Collective Mirror: What the Universe is Asking Us to Remember
My physical wake-up call wasn't just a personal lesson; it is a direct reflection of what is happening in the wider cosmic climate right now for all of us.
We are sitting under a powerful New Moon energy and a massive elemental shift in the sky. This current energy is explicitly bringing us all back to a place of revisiting our old foundations. It is shining a bright spotlight on the automated habits, traps, and coping mechanisms we’ve been navigating for the past decade or more.
The universe is asking us three vital questions right now:
Where are you still falling into the old, automated traps of your past? Where are you choosing a frantic, rushed habit over a true, healing ritual?
Are you honouring your journey? Look back at how far you have travelled since those early hurts. You are not the same person you were ten years ago.
Are you ready to step into the truth? Now is the time to stop rushing, stop forcing the "quick fixes," and finally do what is actually required to bring true clarity and peace into your future years.
If you are running on empty today, don't force or rush your system. Pause. Observe. Ask your body what it actually needs before you act.
Let's exchange our rigid habits for nourishing rituals, and remember to eat from our home turf. 🌾
"Love life and it loves you back."
